10/24/2018 0 Comments Why Your Team's Parents Matter Relationships, relationships, relationships.
I have heard this line from time to time throughout my professional career. Gone are the days when only communicating and interacting with players was the norm. And, that's a good thing. Parents & family members, in many cases, are significantly more involved in their children's lives and want to be informed. At least, that is my experience as a coach. If someone sneezes in school most parents get a text alert these days. Okay, not really. But you get the idea. I remember several coaches I had in my playing days who would avoid parents at all costs. In some cases, they would duck out of a changing room to avoid the parents outside waiting. Avoiding parents because you might get asked why something happened during a game? Avoiding parents because of fear they might question your coaching ability? Or, because the team lost? Your team's parents can be your biggest ally. Soccer is a sport foreign to many parents. At least here in the US. The texture and nuances of soccer look different than sports many Americans have grown up with. Educate your parents. Teach them. Help them understand not only what you are working towards but why you are working towards it. Be transparent and authentic with them. If done correctly, they will go to bat for you. They will help in creating the desired culture you are wanting. They will "sell" your program and club to other parents who might be on the fence. Here are a number of quick and easy things every coach should do to help with parent relations.
Why are any of these things important? We work to build the trust of our players, why not build the trust of our parents too? What are you doing that's innovative or creative to work with your parents? Coach Jason
